What is accreditation and notification?
An accreditation is the official recognition of competence granted by a National Accreditation Body confirming that the conformity assessment body fulfils the requirements that apply to it as far as qualification and equipment are concerned.
A notification is a separate activity distinct from the accreditation.
Upon request, Bodies may be notified according to EU regulations, EU directives or the participation in international testing agreements (=designated by the European Commission through a Notified Body or Notifying Authority) provided that
- they fulfil the requirements of the latest EU regulation, EU directive or international testing agreement and
- provide proof of competence to perform the specified activities described in the respective EU regulation, EU directive or international testing agreement.
For Notified Bodies, the mutual recognition and thus the confidence-building and proof of competence are given by European law.
